Soft Bread Cakes
These bread cakes may be split and toasted, buttered and then filled with what ever you like.
Ingredients
340g (12 oz) whole wheat flour
1 teaspoon salt
30g (1 oz) fresh yeast
1 teaspoon brown sugar
1 cup of milk
30g (1 oz) vegetable fat
1 egg, beaten
Instructions
- Cream the yeast and sugar together until smooth.
- Warm the milk with the vegetable fat.
- Mix the milk and fat with the creamed yeast and stir in the beaten egg.
- Put the flour and salt in a mixing bowl. Make a well in the flour and work the milk mixture in gradually to make a soft dough.
- Knead lightly then form into six round cakes.
- Cover and leave to rise for 20 minutes in a warm place.
- Bake in a oven preheated to 220°C/425°F/gas mark 7, for about 15 minutes.
- Glaze with beaten egg or milk and sugar a few minutes before removing from the oven.
